AWD of Savannah to design and reorganize a Chef’s Kitchen
Custom Cabinetry and Design firm to create sophisticated space
When a well- known local and nationally acclaimed chef and restaurant owner decided to renovate his Bungalow style home in Isle of Hope – just to the southeast of Savannah, GA, he turned to master craftsman and designer Harley Asbaugh from AWD of Savannah for assistance and execution. The home and kitchen, which had gone through several additions over the years that created an awkward layout and an extremely tight space for a professional Chef’s kitchen, needed not only an innovative redesign and updated space planning, but as well a visual facelift for appealing looks overall.
The existing kitchen was barely functioning and far from anything resembling anything the client was looking for; the whole kitchen space desperately needed to be opened up, but the expansion was a huge challenge as the multiple additions had created three different ceiling heights in the kitchen and the two adjacent rooms. AWD saw this challenge as a great opportunity. The solution was to design an architectural beam detail, fabricated of mahogany to disguise the changes in ceiling height, adding an attractive feature, and staying true to the craftsman style of the bungalow home. The cabinets themselves are custom made with sequenced and book matched figured mahogany. The drawer fronts are custom- made from solid wood and have a horizontal grain direction to create visual contrast with the vertical direction of the cabinet fronts.

Another custom piece was the built-in buffet and pantry. The design for the buffet was inspired by an existing mid-century modern piece. Mitering both the solid wood counter and drawer fronts created a seamless corner with no edge-thickness. Stainless steel pulls accent the craftsmanship of the piece. The result is an open, fully custom kitchen any Chef would be honored to use. The new kitchen boasts a large island that doubles as a prep surface, an eat-in bar area and entertaining setting. For visual interest the mahogany cabinets were paired with white quartz surfaces for the counters to have a clean contrast. Stainless steel appliances enrich the professional feel of this Chef’s kitchen.
