The Caravelle chair meets a brief to make a ”non-iconic” chair. As a designer you can react to this in different ways, the one we choose being that of an inspiring challenge.
This is a test of a professional designer. Can you make something so paired down it is almost generic and yet maintaining the highest design value and integrity? How good a craftsman are you?
In our own view we have designed a chair that we could not have designed ten or twenty years ago – simply because you need those years of experience for such a difficult and delicate task. When it becomes all about the economy of materials, the fine-tuning of proportions and the flow of the line you become a craftsman or a sculptor rather than an artist.
In short: less concept, more beauty.
We think we have arrived at a very beautiful and versatile chair. (Our favourite: the extraordinarily thin upholstered version.) We hope that you agree.
