The “Crescent Mall” was designed as the first international standard shopping mall in Vietnam and is the elegant completion of the “crescent walk” development. The design by Korn Architects is bold and idiosyncratic yet finely detailed. The master plan was developed to suit the SOM concert for the heart of the Phu My Hung District, South of the center of Saigon, Viet Nam.
The double curve main façade faces the the main boulevard and is clad in an unique way with ocher color folded aluminum panels that reflect the sunshine in different ways during the day dependant on the vision angle. Overlayed with this silver aluminum fins create a swinging pattern of waves which is also lit at night. A back-lit light strip above the glass canopy that shelters the shopfront is the second night lighting feature and will complete the simple yet thriving appearance after dark. This facade is especially developed for this building and is a world novelty. The plaza towards the main boulevard is going to be the place for special events and promotions and also the place for rest around the large water feature.
The facade towards the crescent walk has a different character. The mall features 5 levels of restaurants which open to the crescent lake with large glass fronts and balconies. The facade show various layers of curved frames in aluminum and natural stone which juxtapose and create a playful relief. This is the lively connection point to the crescent walk with al fresco restaurants and the starlight bridge.
Inside the mall the visitor will experience an overwhelming space with a 5 story atrium. 3 vertical rotundas with seeminly free-floating escalators, bridges crossing the atrium and great views from all levels. The side fascias seem thin and elegant through the design feature of suspended light troughs, all railings are frameless solid glass with wooden handrails. Water bubble columns spanning 3 floors, more than 15m, are a unique design feature and a world novum. The atrium ceiling with a curved pattern of light-coves reminds of the indegenous art of basket weaving and is another special feature just developed for this building. A large sky-light brings natural daylight into the mall at the roof level but blocks direct sunshine. When entering this mall the visitor will realize that a new area of shopping experience has begun.
