The Milla Digital project is the result of collaboration between the City of Zaragoza, the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and the project management team led by MCBAD Colomer Dumont architects.
In 2006 a team from the MIT Media Lab, led by the Digital specialists William J. Mitchell and Dennis Frenchman elaborate a development program on the western part of the city of Zaragoza. Digital is the principle theme of the urban project who offers the Center for Digital Art and Technology designed by Colomer Dumont Mcbad architects as it engine building.
The idea of the city is to put Art at Industry disposal through a building where artists (house of artists), production (business incubator) and communication (Museum interactive and digital) coexist. A complex and innovative program where the interaction between artists, businesses, residents and virtual community structure the basis of the proposed 16 271 m2 project for the benefit of the city ,companies and artists around the world.
Located in an exeptionnel site between the city entry, the new hight speed train station and the campus, the project responds to topographical and accessibility constraints that give it a unique character.
1.Station entry : Direct link to the train station line Madrid Barcelona by the public footbridge accessible from the terrace of the building.
2.City entry : Visibility from the highway at the entrance to the city
3.Campus entry : Opened access to all the programs from groundfloor level of the Milla Digital Campus
DIGITAL AND ARCHITECTURE
The Digital media transforms the concept of art and technology. The purpose is not to create a space to exhibit the works of the time but to think about a flexible space to expose the future.
CENTER FOR ART AND MEDIA
Equipments are not institutions, their priority is addressed to their capacity of exchange and representation. Catalysts for dialogue and creativity, they are able to adapt themselves to an unstable program and generate density, congestion, strength and comfort. New technologies make possible the transformation of landscape spaces by creating authentic spaces, with or without limits, with or without gravity, this virtual world generates an infinity of spaces, time and parallel histories.
SOCIAL AND SYMBOLIC LINK
To become a world reference for the new digital technologies, the purpose of the building must respond to a priority of functional articulation, urban and architectural issuees in order to serve to the Zaragoza’s habitants. Before defining it as an icon the center of digital art is a link to the city and an opening towards a society in search of ever more modernity.
SUPER ENVELOPE – TOPOGRAPHY
Create a maximum volume in order to generate a void to insert freely the program and all the differrent uses. The envelope defines a free volume as a topography supporting the mixed use, using a set of indoor and outdoor areas. Generate visual and physical relationships: access, passages, crossings, limits, transparency, opacity. The envelope is active, evolutionary and adaptable as the expression of a digital equipment.
An adaptable and scalable system giving singular response to the direction, integration and use of the building: to use the void as cornerstone of the architecture. Through the act of building our strategy is to enter the void into the constructed space.
STABLE SPACE – PROGRAMME MODULES
The compartments interfering on the envelope contains the defined spaces of the building. The stable spaces are determined according to specific uses. Each stable space is separate and independent, the distance between them conform the unstable area. Their position determines the intensity of use of the building. They are independent and generate a flow and a frecuency according to the interest of the proposed program.
UNSTABLE SPACE – DIGITAL FIELD
Exchange and hybrids spaces conform the identity of the equipment. Unstable spaces are dependent ensuring the link between the different programs. Flow management, relationships and movements of the building generate density, congestion and tensions. Unstable Space is used as a public space, unexpected and undefined, unlimited as a digital expression and in constant motion.
The envelope is the expression of the program complexity and the perceived density. Located on an strategic point of a 20 ha site the building unites the site the building creates strong identity at the urban scale. The programmable envelope offers a changing architecture. The interactivity of the facades can give a new dimension to architecture in the city and a desire to be appropriated by its inhabitants.
