Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, Ill, west of Chicago, commissioned RTKL to design a freestanding cancer and diagnostic imaging center for a cancer care campus in nearby Warrenville.
RTKL’s design showcases the high quality of the hospital’s brand and its world-class cancer program by creating a building with a contemporary appearance, simple wayfinding, and a comforting environment for cancer patients and their families.
The center’s prominent site next to Interstate 88 also influenced the architecture; the elevation was designed for large signage panels visible from the road. The height reflects the scale of the Interstate, but sunshades and columns give the building a more human scale.
A landscaped garden makes the building even more intimate and gives patients an opportunity to relax in a natural setting. In addition, a rooftop garden capitalizes on the space above the radiation therapy vaults and creates a positive distraction for patients in the private infusion bays that look out to the garden. The new facility has two components—a cancer center and an imaging center.
The cancer center houses research, medical oncology, and radiation oncology. The imaging center includes MRI, CT scan, mammography, and general radiology services. Each center has its own entrance, but they are connected by an attractive, two-story, glass-enclosed lobby. The project is one of several RTKL has designed for Central DuPage Hospital.
