The Confortini Hospital in Verona is not a refurbishment, but rather a creation and an innovative concept establishing a new community place and achieving a space based on the existing lot and urban surroundings. This project includes different structures (building, park, porch and square) crowing the designers’ scheme to replicate the historical setting and monuments of the city and put them together as the pieces of a jigsaw. So, the new Veronica hospital is a project of the city and for the city, like a city within the city, benchmarked by a human and architecural style.
The idea of an “open hospital” is translated into a clear, legible structure like a city with a multifunctional venues and various area with different protection and access levels, but sharing a very high environmental consideration. Opened in November 2010 it is liked to the city’s university, it comprises of 33 operating rooms and a large day surgery department with 7-8 operating rooms.
Particular attention was paid to the patient journey, from the emergency department to clinic to ward, integrating disciplines to bring distances closer together. The environmental and sustainable strong point is the technological pole comprising a Heating, a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) and a refrigerating plant.
Remote heating is performed through three systems in the following priority order: remote heating from the city, natural gas and oil networks. The first system is the priority mode minimizing the local energy production and maximizing the use of the CHP plants supplying the city network.Location: Verona, Italy
