World Market Center is the world’s largest showroom complex for the home and hospitality furnishings industry, serving domestic and international sellers and buyers. Set in the heart of Las Vegas, the fastest-growing home furnishings market in the country, World Market Center will encompass more than 12 million square feet of world-class exhibit space in 8 buildings on 57 acres when it is completed in 2012. Jerde’s master plan reflects and expresses the creativity and innovation of the industry, envisioning the project as a dynamic assemblage of geometric shapes and forms integrated into a state-of-the-art showroom campus.

Background
When development partners World Market Center L.L.C. of Las Vegas and New York-based Related Companies initially brought The Jerde Partnership in to create the master-plan in 2001, Las Vegas was already identified as an attractive market for a wholesale furniture hub. With a rapidly growing population, relatively cheap airfare, and an ample inventory of hotel rooms, the city offered an excellent platform from which World Market Center could compete with established wholesale furnishings markets in High Point, N.C San Francisco. In 2003, Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman predicted that Las Vegas will become the “furniture industry Mecca.” With the opening of phase one in 2005, phase two in 2007, and phase three in 2008, the complex now encompasses five million square feet, larger than any trade merchandise mart in the United States. Currently, 154 international companies from 20 countries are among the 1,500 exhibitors and the complex has seen a 60 percent increase in non-U.S. buyers from July 2007 to January 2008.

An independent study by the University of Nevada Las Vegas estimates the non-gaming economic impact of the semi-annual Las Vegas Markets at $200 million annually. Additionally, upon completion in 2012, World Market Center will have created an estimated 35,000 additional direct and indirect jobs, provide more than $1.5 billion in additional personal income and and more than $60 million in local and state tax revenue.

Design
The master plan is composed of eight buildings totaling 12 million square feet of various showroom and convention center space, complemented with outdoor water features, courtyards, and enclosed skywalks connecting the various buildings. The design blends the indigenous Las Vegas landscape with contemporary, elements using a terra-cotta color palette, earth tones and metallic glass panels that reflect the changing colors of the desert sun and sky. Invoking a strong sense of architectural drama, the colossal scale is accentuated by the convergence of exterior geometric blocks with iconic features dramatically soaring 300 feet into the desert sky.

Jerde situated the eight buildings around a central plaza, which echoes the famed European piazzas and other memorable communal spaces, creating a highly visible gathering place framed by a carved architectural composition highlighting spectacular views of the surrounding city and landscape.

Building A establishes a strong sense of massing, anchoring the project’s master plan. The exterior features a tectonic solid masonry façade punctured with a series of louvered openings. A large semi-circular carved into the exterior connects to the natural forms of the surrounding desert landscape. The sixteen-story 2.1 million square foot mass of building B forms a backdrop to the plaza on the south end and is a geometric transition between buildings A and B. Horizontal fins and diagonal struts bisect the blue tinted low E glass of the lobby entry, which shade and define the transparent geometry of the glass form. Building C is the first segment of a three-part building which when completed will extend 1,170 feet from the court to Discovery Way. Ascending sixteen stories, it is composed of a series of interlocking forms that extend to the top of the building and outline the circulation pattern moving from the lobby to the top of the building.
