Designing a comfortable and efficient workspace is the dream for everyone who works from home. And even if you’re not going to spend that much time in your home office, it’s still a good idea to be mindful of the general layout and recommended dimensions.
To determine your home office dimensions, you’ll first have to think about your needs, the functionality of the space, and how much room you have to spare. Thus, there’s no definitive answer as to how big the office should be.
That said, we can tell you the average size of home office so that you can have a frame of reference. Most people who do business at home will need roughly 70 to 200 square feet, although it’s not uncommon for some to go as small as 30 square feet.

What is the Average Home Office Size?
As pointed out, there’s no hard and fast rule regarding office sizes in homes. But just because you can go for any dimensions you want doesn’t mean you should, as this can result in a cramped office or a room with too much unused space.
To give you an idea of what would be a good size for your designated working space, here are some average square footage ranges.
1. 30 to 50 Square Feet
Small-sized home office can range from 30 to 50 square feet.A small home office size is usually 30 to 50 square feet, which is just enough for a modest single desk and chair. Don’t expect too much storage space – you’d be lucky if you could fit a couple of file cabinets there.
Since this size of small office usually isn’t very comfortable, it’s best for people who only work from home every once in a while. I can also imagine such a home office for hobbyists, such as part-time YouTubers.
Although some people may suggest downsizing the room to 20 square feet, I wouldn’t recommend doing so, since 30 sq. ft. is practically closet size in the first place. To give you a perspective, a small office cubicle measures 6×6 in feet, or 36 sq. ft.
2. 50 to 100 Square Feet
This is a more sensible range for your home office. Although still considered a medium size, it’s enough for people who work 30-40 hours per week in the comforts of their own house.
When in a home office this size, you don’t have to be too stringent on space. You can fit one big office desk or two smaller ones, along with at least one chair and a medium-sized file cabinet.
2. 100 to 300 Square Feet
People who expect to dedicate themselves to working remotely full-time should get an office that is on the larger end of the scale.
Obviously, a room this spacious is more than enough to accommodate several chairs and desks, should you need to invite someone over to work on a project together. It also functions as a commercial home office.
There’s another advantage to this option – it can be used for tax deductions. Since how much tax can be deducted is calculated by how much of your house is used as a home office, the bigger the dedicated space is, the more money you’ll save.
What is Considered a Good Home Office Size?
- Consider the space available. If you live in a small house, dedicating an entire room to working may be hard. In such a case, it may be better to just use a spare corner or repurpose an old closet.
- Think about your needs, such as how much time you’ll work from home. The more time you spend in your home office, the bigger it needs to be.
- What will you be working on when using the home office? Depending on the activities and their respective workstations, you might need a bigger desk or more furniture, which translates to a bigger room.
- With storage space and your comfort taken into account, 70 square feet is generally a good office size.
