Gwyn Duggan Design Associates, Inc., the award winning interior design team lead by Gwyn Duggan, presents one of their latest renovation projects. This latest project consisted of a major kitchen renovation that included reworking the current space and incorporating a small living room addition. The original kitchen space was overcrowded, outdated, and did not function for the growing family. To make maximum use of the space, the original staircase, connecting first and second floor area, was redirected, freeing up an entire wall for additional work surface and storage space.
The client’s wish list was long but Gwyn Duggan Design fulfilled everything the family asked for. That list included a large kitchen island, professional range, two sinks, an eat-in dining area, and a computer desk area for keeping track of the family’s busy schedule. All of these tasks were accomplished and reflected in the creation a highly functional kitchen, dining, and living space. As an added feature the computer desk area is designed as part of a built-in cabinet with hiding pocket doors that can be closed for privacy or to keep the space looking tidy.
Aesthetically, the client’s choice of color from throughout the rest of the home largely inspired the color palette in the renovated space. The client opted for a white kitchen that was elegant yet comfortable and reflected the style of the home as a whole. Subtle changes in color such as the contrasting kitchen island and a slightly darker color for the interior of the glass cabinets were used to create visual interest, but at the same time keep the space calm and cohesive. The darker color inside of the white glass-front cabinetry was also specially chosen to allow the client’s white china to stand out as a decorative feature.
Overall the outcome is simultaneously traditional and modern, creating an atmosphere that is both elegant and welcoming. To achieve this feeling, Gwyn Duggan Design Associates once again teamed up with Harley Ashbaugh, of AWD of Savannah, for the custom cabinetry throughout the space. “The cabinetry has clean lines with subtle traditional details that really help to express the client’s point of view. In general, I love projects like this home renovation overall as the design is challenging and gives me an opportunity to create a unique space. My job is to put it all together and make everything work cohesively,” said Gwyn Duggan, owner of Gwyn Duggan Design Associates, when asked about the project.
