Born in 1965 in Havana, Cuba, René Barba studied art in Florida between 1986 and 1989. In 1994 he graduated in industrial design from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs de Paris. Since then, he is both a freelance designer and lecturer in various art and fashion schools. Experimenting with a wide range of materials, he designs first and foremost pared-down forms allying minimalism and comfort. He is the creator of Soca’s Lollipop chair and the Stixx modular screens which he designed for the German brand Koziol.

Having worked with glass for a range of lighting designed for Belgian firm Serax, he now explores a new material for Ligne Roset for use on his new Paper Lamp table lamp: non-woven fabric. Not just any old fabric, of course: a special non-woven fabric which is tear-proof and classed M1 (non-inflammable). This non-woven fabric is made up in a kind of double-sided envelope, with one printed and one white face – this covers the entire structure and also the black lacquered steel base. This shade in non-woven fabric, light as a feather, gives off a muted light to create a calming atmosphere. With its attractive curves, the delicate nature of its irregular hand-drawn style (vertical stripes in the case of the small version and squares in the case of the large version) is the source of its charm.

This kind of graphic effect, currently very fashionable, echoes the strong trend for textured, geometric motifs on flat surfaces in both architecture and interior decoration: this is a similar ‘handdrawn’ approach to that adopted by Inga Sempé for Tratti, her new collection of tiles for the Italian firm Mutina.

The large version is printed with a square motif; the small version has vertical stripes. 7W E 27 LED bulb, colour temperature 2700 K (warm white). Small table lamp W 26 D 5 H 47.
