Concept & Competition Tengbom | Psykiatrins Hus

Tengbom | Psykiatrins HusBackground

The result of an architectural competition won in 2007 the new hospital is under construction and will be inaugurated in 2012.

Concept

The concept was to build a specialist hospital that meets current and future needs for people who need psychiatric care. The ambition and goal is offering safe modern medical care towards satisfied ward and out-patients and to foster proud and dedicated employees. It is perceived that the treatment and recovery in patients is influenced by the environment that surrounds them.

Tengbom | Psykiatrins HusAll patients have private rooms with enclosed balconies oriented in a ribbon around the building with views out towards the nearby park. Departmental layout allows patients dignified and gradual interaction from their private sphere, through to semiprivate day rooms, and then public realm of the central atrium. The main theme is openness and transparency. The floor plans are open, large windows and glazed surfaces give a lot of light and visual contact which should lead to spontaneous meetings between people.

The facility is located within Uppsala’s existing hospital district and is a stand alone building with a centrally located glazed and landscaped atrium. Two smaller open landscaped courtyards flank the core. Patients and staff are greeted by a generous main entrance opening onto the new street adjacent to the existing hospital. The main entrance is also an “operational hub” meant to serve as a common gathering place.

“Logistic and transparency” have been important watchwords for generating the building plan-forms and the proper function of the various departments. Internal common areas open up to one another and while bright and functional they avoid any form of institutional character. Healthcare is offered on four levels with equal distribution between outpatient and inpatient care. Research facilities are located centrally between outpatient and inpatient care centrally on all floors, while outpatient waiting rooms and meeting rooms are oriented out towards the cityscape.
